ICE Detains Oklahoma Professor With H-1B Visa

Immigration and Customs Enforcement brokers detained a College of Oklahoma professor Saturday whereas he was on his technique to a convention.

Vahid Abedini, a professor of Iranian Research, was stopped and detained whereas he was boarding his flight to attend the Center East Research Affiliation convention in Washington, D.C. He was launched Monday evening, in line with a LinkedIn submit.

Abedini didn’t reply to Inside Increased Ed’s request for remark. In accordance with Joshua Landis, Abedini’s colleague and co-director of the Middle for Center East Research on the College of Oklahoma, Abedini has an H-1B visa.

“ICE arrested our beloved professor Vahid Abedini,” Landis wrote on X Monday. “He has been wrongfully detained as a result of he has a legitimate H-1B visa—a non-immigrant work visa granted to people in ‘specialty occupations,’ together with greater schooling school. We’re praying for his swift launch.”

Reached for remark, a Division of Homeland Safety spokesperson advised Inside Increased Ed: “This Iranian nationwide was detained for traditional questioning. He is been launched.”

Abedini’s detention makes actual the fears of many international and American lecturers who’re rethinking or boycotting journey to tutorial conferences within the U.S. on account of considerations about wrongful arrests by immigration enforcement.

In a press release, the MESA Board of Administrators mentioned they had been “disturbed” to study of Abedini’s detention and “deeply involved” in regards to the circumstances. The College of Oklahoma declined to touch upon the scenario.
